Downtown Businesses Expand Hours for Holiday Season

Mon, Nov 03, 2014

Think outside of the big box and shop local this holiday season.  Shop Downtown Astoria.

The Astoria Downtown Historic District Association (ADHDA) and downtown businesses are working together to make this holiday season downtown one of the most memorable yet!  With expanded business hours, holiday roller skating, photos with Santa, caroling, lighting up downtown, and more, Downtown Astoria is the place to be this holiday season.

Shop late every Friday, now through Dec. 19!  Participating businesses will be open until 7 p.m. or later; enjoy great deals and unique gifts for the entire family.  In addition to shopping at your downtown merchants during the holiday season, ADHDA invites you to join in several festive community events.

We have all heard of Black Friday, but do you know about “Plaid Friday”?  See what it’s all about on Friday, Nov. 28, as downtown gets a little more vibrant with plaid!  Participating businesses will be offering great deals the day after Thanksgiving.  Wear plaid, and shop downtown Astoria for your holiday needs.

Then, on Saturday, Nov. 29, “Skate Into Christmas” at The Astoria Armory!  Santa and Crew will be at 1636 Exchange Street from 2:30-4:30 p.m. for pictures with the Jolly Ol’ St Nick, arts and crafts, face painting and roller skating!  This event is free with donations of canned food items accepted to support the CCA Regional Food Bank.  While open to kids of all ages, children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult.

After the event on Saturday, Nov. 29, join Santa and Crew as they make their way from The Astoria Armory to 12th and Commercial Streets for the Annual Lighting of Downtown at 5 p.m.  Join us for caroling and merriment with the ASOC Scrooged Choir and the North Coast Chorale to kick off the holiday season, as we add a little sparkle downtown.

The festivities and fun continues for the 2nd Saturday Art Walk on Dec. 13, 5-8 p.m.  ADHDA invites you to be a part of our gallery, in the first annual coloring contest – for all ages!  Coloring sheets will be available at the Nov. 29 “Skate Into Christmas” party on Nov. 29 or you can download a copy from astoriadowntown.com.

Completed coloring sheets should be turned in to Old Town Framing at 1287 Commercial Street in downtown Astoria by 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 8.  All submissions will be displayed during the Art Walk on Saturday, Dec. 13.  Winners will be selected from the following age groups: Kindergarten to 2nd grade, 3rd to 5th grade, 6th to 8th grade, 9th to 12th grade, and adults.

Santa’s Workshop is sponsored by ADHDA, The Astoria Armory, Astoria Kiwanis, Astoria Warrenton Chamber, Purple Cow Toys and Vintage Hardware!
