Meet artist Sarah Polenick from 4–7 PM as she unveils new work for October Artwalk. Painting en plein air, Sarah captures changing light, atmosphere, and the character of the landscape with expressive color and brushwork. Explore original paintings and fine art prints inspired by the Pacific Northwest and beyond, including familiar coastal landmarks and sweeping landscapes of the American West.

Astoria artists Midori Hirose and Slayer Rowan spent the past four months reclaiming discarded materials from the Astoria Transfer Station through the Coastal Oregon Artist Residency (COAR), a partnership between Recology Western Oregon and Astoria Visual Arts. Hirose uses layering, weaving, assemblage, and found objects to explore memory, connection, and the ways materials carry traces of the lives they have passed through. Rowan takes a more intuitive approach, allowing the wide assortment of salvaged materials to guide the process and determine what each work ultimately becomes. Now in its ninth round, COAR supports artists working with recycled materials, inspiring resource conservation and new ways of thinking about art and the environment. Little Hauntings is a collection of small works by Gianna Fabiano offering a glimpse into the hidden yet ever-1008present aspects of the human condition. Each piece explores something that lingers beneath the surface—grief, sin, guilt, revenge, and other unseen forces that remain behind the masks we wear. These elements reveal themselves only through closer examination, often through a spiritual or religious lens of introspection. “O God who art ever the same, let me know myself, let me know you!” St. Augustine. Meet Gianna from 5:00 - 7:00 pm. Visitors are invited to confess their own stupid ideas in the Ministry's AI Confessional Booth. Step inside, speak freely, and surrender your questionable thoughts to the machine. No idea is too ridiculous, impractical, embarrassing, or beautifully stupid. The AI listens, responds, and becomes an unlikely accomplice in the creative process. The Ministry of Stupid Ideas is an organization, based in Portland, dedicated to the collection, development, and preservation of humanity's least sensible ideas.

Celebrating our 14th anniversary, we are honored to be hosting two solo exhibitions during the month of August. In our South Gallery we welcome back the inimitable Tom Cramer with his latest series, BOLD, comprised of complex, color saturated oil paintings on canvas and wood burned oil paintings on panel. Cramer has been at the epicenter of the Portland art scene for decades as an exhibiting artist as well as creating public art. He is known to utilize almost anything as his canvas, including buildings, cars, and stage sets. This series, BOLD is a fresh and playful abstract series exuding contagious and uplifting energy of the enigmatic Tom Cramer, both in his paintings and his personality. In our Front Gallery we are excited to host a solo exhibition for Portland visual artist and filmmaker Arnold Pander. For his first show at Imogen, he brings a new series of watercolor paintings as well as oil paintings titled Distance. Within this series he’s primarily exploring the mystical beauty of light and water through abstract seascapes, focusing on mood and design. Pander, who grew up in a family of artists, has been working professionally for over 3 decades. Both Tom and Arnold will be at the gallery and available to answer questions about their work, during Artwalk 5 – 8 pm. Buoyancy, a new series of encaustic paintings by Elise Wagner, created from her studio perched out over the mighty Columbia River in Astoria, Oregon. This space has shaped her recent work, immersing and permeating every aspect of her compositions, anchored physically by a buoy that is steadfastly tethered in place, marking passage while keeping navigator’s safe. This small man-made structure, has become metaphor for Wagner, who’s attention has been captured by what she considers to be a symbol of resilience, orientation, and the ability to remain afloat amid uncertainty. Elise will be at the gallery during the opening reception 5 - 8 pm that evening. Elise will also be giving an artist’s talk Saturday, September 19th, at 2:00 pm, join us to learn more about her process, inspiration and career. We are excited to present this unique photographic exhibition by Anna Daedalus and Michael Hanson, both exploring Northwest landscape. Their work, linked by love of the Pacific Northwest and its rich history, natural and man-made, reflects cultural identity based on the land. Daedalus, a long-time Portland based artist, now resides within the lower Columbia River estuary where her work has been strongly inspired by her environ. Michael Hanson, who calls Hood River home, also takes inspiration from the river bringing imagery that reflects economic structure of river life, both past and present. Within this new series he also brings photographs of the dramatic coastal terrain of Oregon. This exhibition, a true love letter to the landscape, is firmly rooted in nostalgia of and for the region. Anna Daedalus will also be giving an artist talk, Saturday, October 24th at 2:00 pm. All are invited to attend.

"Natural Harmony" is a group exhibition of landscape photographs juried by Jody Miller, that celebrates moments where the land sang its own song. Images that capture the land’s persistence — its resilience and refusal to be silenced. Work focusing on an expansive view of “landscape” — landscapes that endure against all odds, whether that is presented through nature’s persistence against humanity, through surviving harsh environment, or simply through a moment where the landscape refused to go unnoticed. Also continuing in the gallery for the month of October is "Immersion" by local photographer David White. An exhibit of black and white images from Olallie Creek in the Cascade Mountain Range of Oregon. LightBox also features work from The Guild at LightBox consisting of Jim Fitzgerald, Jody Miller, Julie Moore, Marc McVey, Rachel Wolf, Kathy Radie, Michael Puff, Loren Nelson and Nicholas Dill. This work leans toward surrealism and impressionism, ranging from landscapes to figurative. Large work from 1970 to present day that makes you think.

RiverSea Gallery presents Deep Northwest, an exhibition of ethereal landscape paintings by renowned Oregon artist Erik Sandgren, whose personal experience of the Pacific Northwest over the course of a lifetime profoundly informs his work. Sandgren’s paintings are sublime expressions of moody north coast wild spaces. Imbued with the rhythms of nature, they transport the viewer into a world suffused in soft greens, blues, and grays dominated by powerful natural forces. In these works, the vast sweep of wild sky, the surge of roiling tide, and the depths of entangling forests immerse any human figure or structure. Sandgren's affection for plein air painting lends an ineffable energy and immediacy to his landscapes, whether painted on site or completed from studies later in the studio.

Sarah Hammond’s Silhouettes of Memory explores how memories shift over time. Fluid movement represents the emotions and uncertainty of memory, while silhouetted figures represent the people, places, and moments that remain long after the details have faded. Hours: 11-5

Kristen Klein is an Oregon Coast artist who finds inspiration in water, wild places, and the things the tide leaves behind. What the Tide Returned grew from her beach walks and runs and collecting marine rope and line along the way. What was once discarded and lost rope and line takes on a new form in What the Tide Returned, preserving the marks of tides, storms, currents, time, and use.
